What are the key dates of the contest?

The contest starts on Thursday, November 1, 2007 and ends on Friday, November 30, 2007.  Participants must remain smoke-free during the entire contest to be eligible to win.

How do I enroll in Quit and Win?
There are two simple steps to becoming a Quit & Win Participant.

Step 1: Online Registration
Complete the Online Registration Form anytime between October 1 and October 29, 2007. Alternatively, registration may be completed by fax (612-625-2925) or phone (612-626-5520). After 5 p.m. October 29, you must complete this step in-person at the Quit & Win On-Campus Enrollment Table on your campus on October 30 or 31.

Step 2: On-Campus Enrollment
After completing Online Registration, you will need to stop by the On-Campus Enrollment Table on October 30 or 31 (click here for times and locations on your campus). At On-Campus Enrollment, you will be asked to do the following (which takes less than 15 minutes):

  1. Fill out a brief survey about your current and past use of tobacco.
  2. Submit a urine sample. We use this to verify that you are a current smoker by testing for derivatives of nicotine.
  3. Receive quit aids like nicotine patches or gum, or sign up to receive support calls from a Quit Coach.

How will my tobacco-use (or tobacco-free) status be proven?

Contest participants will submit a urine specimen when they stop by the Quit & Win On-Campus Enrollment Table to verify tobacco-use within the past month. At the end of the contest, potential winners will need to submit another urine specimen to verify tobacco-free status. Use of Nicotine Replacement Therapy (patches, gum, etc.) or exposure to secondhand smoke will not affect our verification of participants' smoking status.

Is there free Nicotine Replacement Therapy (patches, gum) available?

Yes, as a participant of Quit & Win you will receive a free starter kit of four weeks of patches or gum when you stop by the Quit & Win On-Campus Enrollment Table (Step 2). We strongly suggest that you complete the recommended course of patches or gum to ensure your success. You can purchase additional patches/gum over the counter.

I recently quit smoking. Am I eligible for the contest?

If you quit smoking on or after Monday, October 1, 2007, you are eligible for the contest. If you quit smoking before Monday, October 1, 2007, we congratulate you on being smoke-free; however, you are not eligible to be a Quit & Win contest participant. You are eligible for the role of a Smoke-free Friend in this contest.

What if I only use smokeless tobacco, cigars, or pipes?

While we strongly discourage the use of smokeless tobacco, cigars, and pipes and hope that you make the decision to quit, the Quit & Win contest is only for cigarette smokers. If you use any of the above products, are interested in quitting, and would like assistance, please call QUITPLAN at 1-888-354-PLAN (7526).

If I decide to enter the contest, do I NEED to have a Smoke-free Friend register with me?
Yes! Information from past Quit & Win participants tells us that Smoke-free Friends are a key part of being successful during the contest, and we want you all to be successful! We recommend that your Smoke-free Friend be someone you are comfortable talking with and know fairly well.

All Quit & Win participants MUST select a Smoke-free Friend. The Smoke-free Friend must currently be a non-smoker, 18 years of age or older, and be willing to answer a brief questionnaire if their friend (the contest participant) is chosen as a potential winner. Smoke-free Friends do not need to stop by the Quit & Win On-Campus Enrollment Table; however, contest participants must provide the name, phone number, and e-mail address (if applicable) of the Smoke-free Friend when filling out the registration forms. Contest participants should choose a Smoke-free Friend who can provide support during the quitting process.

What if I’m not a smoker?

Since we want to show our support for those who are already tobacco-free, we have set up an opportunity for these folks to enter the contest as well! The smoke-free student simply needs to partner with a friend who is entering the contest as a smoker and register as his/her Smoke-free Friend. All registered and eligible Smoke-free Friends will have a chance to win a $250 gift certificate even if the smoking participant does not quit.
